Making a Grow Light Plant Stand - Page 3

attaching the long strips to make the front "ladder"

two integral vise work benches hold the ladders upright

I have raised up the ladders and used two integral vise work benches to hold them upright and about 4 feet apart. The work benches are a great help around the shop but whatever you have to do the job is fine. I got these on sale for about $10.00 apiece some years ago and they have been more than worth it.

gluing cross pieces to the top on both front and back

I start building my "ladders" by gluing cross pieces to the top on both front and back. This establishes the width of the light stand.

clamp at the top of the stand below the cross piece

Note the clamp at the top of the stand below the cross piece. The clamp is holding nothing in place but gives a resting place for the end of the board before it is glued in place and held with brads or screws. It is not necessary but very convenient.

laid down for adding cross pieces

Now the whole thing can be laid down and the other cross pieces added.

cross pieces in place

I will use four, one at top and bottom and one each at the 16" and 32" marks. One at the 24" mark is not necessary and will later get in the way.

flipping the whole thing over to continue on the other side

I like to let the glue set for at least an hour before flipping the whole thing over to continue on the other side. This is likely a lot longer than necessary but patience is a valuable tool.
